It’s finally here! After nearly a 6 month delay, Disney’s live action ‘Mulan’ finally hit many peoples T.V. screens this Labor Day weekend and we’re going to give you a QUICK REVIEW!
Now let’s get something clear right off the bat. If you’re expecting a carbon copy of the animated ‘Mulan’ then you need to know this isn’t it, and that’s not a bad thing! Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’ is an absolutely amazing retelling of a classic story. The foundation of this new film is still overall the same as the animated. A young girl, who’s soul purpose is to bring honor to the family by being matched with a husband must take her fathers place when her country is being invaded. Knowing that her father couldn’t possibly go fight, she takes his place.
As you might expect from a movie that cost more than $200 million to make, the set-pieces and filming locations are spectacular. The colors are vibrant and the landscapes are visually stunning.
As for Mulan herself, played by Yifei Liu, she’s a perfect Mulan. Her fighting skills and her emotional/physical performance is definitely felt in the movie. While it is true that Mulan has no love interest in this movie, there is a character very close to Mulan, Chen Honghui (Yoson An), who looks at Mulan differently than the other men in the group. This is important to note as we think we will definitely be seeing a sequel to this movie.
Another great addition versus the animated is the action! This retelling is very much overall an action movie with Mulan’s story intertwined into it.
So, overall, I say get this movie! Yes I know what you’ll say… “It’s $30!” And while this is true for many families this is still a cheaper option than going to a movie for a family of four, especially the dine-in movies. While the movie could have used some actual music being sung, the no Mushu and no love interest thing is not really missed in this movie. And as far as the love interest, you never know what might happen if Disney decides to make a sequel to this movie.
